Glossary of Terms

If you’re not quite sure what a term or phrase means, check out the following descriptions of common terms and phrases below.

Bay - colour of a horse
A horse with a brown body , black points and mane and tail

Chestnut - colour of a horse
chestnut is any shade of red/brown
Colt - A young male horse or pony
A young male horse who has not been castrated

Dressage - Riding precise school figures in competition
Taken from the french word to train your horse

Filly - A young female horse or pony
A young female horse
Foal - A baby horse
A baby horse is known as a foal

G -

Gelding - A castrated male horse over three years old
A male horse which has had his breeding ability removed
Grey - colour of a horse
white horses are referred to as grey
Groom - Job description or to brush and clean a horse
There are 2 explanations
1 . From the latin servant , now used as a job title for someone who cares for horses .
2 To groom a horse is to brush and clean it

H -

HH - Hands High
There are 4inches in a hand and this is the way we measure the height of our ponies and horses
Hippotherapy - physiotherapy on horse back
Only an RDA qualified Physiotherapist can take hippotherapy sessions or an experienced instructor with permission and training.
Horse - horses measure over 14.2hh
horse is the collective name given to the species but is also used for a horse over 14.2hh
HWC - Heavy weight cob
Build of a horse

Mare - A female horse over 3 years old
The name given to a female horse or pony
MW - Middle Weight
Build of a horse e.g. MW Cob

Pony - a smaller horse up to 14.2hh
horses of 14.2hh and under are ponies

R -

RDA - Riding for the disabled association
Our organisation
RDAGI - Riding for the disabled group instructor
Once qualified as an RDAGI the instructor can teach a group of riders for which they have been assessed at their regular venue .If they have new riders with different disabilities they will need further assessment.
RDAI - Riding for the disabled instructor
A more experienced instructor who has been examined to teach riders of all abilities and disabilities at any venue, and has sound knowledge of disabilities and physiotheraphists practises within RDA
RDASI - Riding for the disabled senior instructor
A very experienced riding for the disabled instructor who has been on futher courses and taken a higher exam .With sound background knowledge of all disabilities and RDA knowledge .
